AmeriCorps Intern Program
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 75,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.
Great Basins Institute’s AmeriCorps Intern program places many of its interns into service opportunities where they learn valuable work skills for current and future positions in addition to earning an education award with a modest living allowance. In turn, the interns gain and develop an appreciation for environmental conservation, gain management and data collection skills and are given a chance to work with partner agencies such as the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, and the State of Nevada Divisions of Forestry, Wildlife, Parks and Lands. Once the AmeriCorps Interns finish their internship, they are well prepared to tackle new positions within GBI or outside of GBI.
Employment and Partnerships
We partner with Federal and State agencies. This partnership with the federal agencies is through Cooperative Agreements. A Cooperative Agreements is a statement of collaboration between partner agency and GBI to achieve mutual goals of environmental management and conservation. AmeriCorps is a huge partner – both with Grant programs and Education Award program.
The funding from AmeriCorps allows GBI to hire interns and place them in various setting so they are able to gain professional development. GBI AmeriCorps Interns are employees of GBI who work with agency partners in support of agency goals and objectives that address shared GBI-Agency missions.
AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents aged 17 or older. Members serve full or part time over a 3- to 12-month period.
