In September, the National Park Foundation announced an investment of more than $3.7 million in service corps programs across the country, an increase from $3.5 million in 2019. The Foundation partnered with the National Park Service and more than thirty partner organizations to support a diverse network of service corps crews.
Among these is an all-woman Nevada Conservation Corps resource conservation crew. This crew supports recreation planning and habitat restoration, and is also learning about bat management at Great Basin National Park. This, the NCC’s first all-woman crew, has proven to be an exciting and fulfilling experience for those involved. As senior crew lead, Stephanie Greenwood explains, “being surrounded by such smart and capable women inspires me to work harder every day as a leader and I feel very honored to lead this amazing women’s crew. I can only hope for a future full of more women’s crews.” Aurora Pinkey-Drobnis, director of NCC operations, rightly applauded the National Park Foundations and park staff assistance in making this possible: “They have provided a visibility that illuminates a pathway towards a successful career in conservation.”
These developments also earned praise from U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto: “I learned to love the outdoors as a young woman, and I’m thrilled to announce this grant funding that will support Great Basin National Park’s all-woman crew that is empowering women to break gender roles and strive for careers in conservation.”
As we move forward, GBI will continue to use NPS funds in collaboration with Great Basin National Park, HistoriCorps, Lake Mead, Tule Springs, and Mojave Preserve to field additional interdisciplinary women’s resource conservation crews. And we look forward to many exciting future collaborations with the National Park Foundation.
