GBI Media Contest July 2024 Submissions

The theme for our July media contest was “the Dog Days of Summer.” Those working in the West also know these days as “fire season,” which is illustrated in the winning image above. It comes to us from Shelby Blair, a GBI Research Associate working as a biological technician at Lakeview, OR.

The additional wonderful submissions to the contest, however, show how the dog days can mean different things to different people working in different locales. Enjoy the variety on display below.

Lucía Magaña, Research Associates Program, Native Seed Program Technician, Seeds of Success, Battle Mountain BLM District, Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. “Hovering off the Ground on Anaho Island.”
Gabby Barnas, Research Associate Program, Desert Tortoise Wildlife Technician, Mojave National Preserve. “A badger goes out for an early morning stroll in the desert before the heat of the day sets in.”
Morgan Musgrove, Cultural Resources Program, Archaeological Technician, Eagle Lake Ranger District in Lassen National Forest. “The Dog Days of Summer Don’t Have to be Lonely!”
Emma Pfeifer, AmeriCorps, Utility Inventory and Mapping Technician, Zion National Park. “A mule deer takes an eternal rest in a cool shady spot with a view.”
