GBI Media Contest October 2020 Submissions

“Fall” was the theme of this month’s GBI media contest. And, as usual, GBI employees were able to capture the atmosphere and color of the season beautifully in the photos presented here. Our October winner was the Nevada Conservation Corps’ Zach Turner, who took the photo above. He calls this one A Lineup of Sawyers. “This photo was taken in Great Basin National Park, where we had the pleasure of working with their wonderful park service on a riparian restoration and fire break project,” he explains. “We were overcome by their hospitality and look forward to returning next week to plant native wild rye.”

Enjoy some of our other submissions below.

Laurie Fisher, Research Associate. A spooky view of Gass Peak early in the morning, as viewed through a Joshua tree at Desert National Wildlife Refuge.

Sarah Mendoza, Research Associate. “Ravens are often associated with the Halloween season. So while tracking desert tortoises outside of Boulder City, I saw a raven having a mid-day snack of a snake!”

Maddy Noet, Research Associate. “This is a black bear skull I found in the Tahoe National Forest while surveying one rainy day. Pretty spooky if you ask me.”

Diana Hitchen, Research Associate. “We all love yellow leaves, but stream ecologists love Fall most for the easier river crossings! This is Pie Creek outside of Elko Nevada.”

Kyle Weber, AmeriCorps. “I’m on the LTBMU Forestry Crew as an AmeriCorps member. Fall means cool foggy (or hazy) mornings. Attached is a photo of our truck parked at our field site before a day of power line corridor work.”
