If you’re visiting the Great Basin Institute’s website, you probably have a notion of how rich in natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities the state of Nevada is, but maybe you’re not as familiar with the Silver (or Sagebrush, or Battle Born) State’s history? Well, luckily for the intrepid academic or the casually curious, Elko, Nevada is home to one of the best places to learn all about that.

The September 2014 issue of True West Magazine lists the California Trail Interpretive Center as one of it’s top ten western museums. Says the article:

“Between 1841 and 1869, roughly 250,000 people made a 2,000-mile trek to California. This Bureau of Land Management interpretive center tells their story, but also examines impact on the land and explores the culture of the Shoshone Indians.

Travelers across northern Nevada should not miss the California Trail Interpretive Center in Elko, where visitors will enjoy the permanent exhibits on the history of the California Trail and the local Shoshone Indians, as well as numerous living history events.”

This is the second time the California Trail Interpretive Center has received this honor. GBI celebrates with the Trail Center, having provided AmeriCorps Interns who assist with operations, education, and interpretation at the Trail Center, while gaining training and skills to advance their careers, since 2009.
