MLK Day of Service in the Las Vegas community

MLK Day of Service in the Las Vegas community

On January 20th, 2014, twenty NCC AmeriCorps members and five GBI staff volunteered their time with the Las Vegas chapter of Habitat for Humanity, to celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. The AmeriCorps members worked on two of the eight homes Habitat will build this year to support families in need. At the building site, located in North Las Vegas, the AmeriCorps members and staff helped to install drywall on the interior of one house, and hammer in sheeting for the roof of the second house. The members really enjoyed a chance to give back to the community, and work on projects that differ from their usual restoration and conservation tasks. Over the course of the day, members completed installation of sheeting on one half of the roof, and installed drywall along the ceilings and walls of 3 rooms on the interior of the house. It was a beautiful day, with plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures, and the rewarding experience of directly giving back to the community and seeing the immediate, tangible results of their efforts.  This year marked the fifth consecutive year of the NCC partnering with Habitat for Humanity for the MLK Day of Service.
