OUR PROGRAMS

The Great Basin Institute is an interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental research, education, and service throughout the West. Founded in 1998 at the University of Nevada, GBI advances applied research to support science-based adaptive management of public lands. The Institute is dedicated to the promotion of science through field studies programs, conservation practices, and public outreach.

The Great Basin Institute works in collaboration with many programs, including Nevada Conservation Corps; Research Associate Program (RAP); Cultural Resource Program; Basin & Range Forestry; NEPA Services; Ecological Monitoring Program; Taylor Creek Visitor Center; Galena Creek Visitor Center; and the Tallac Historic Site.

The Institute’s mission is to advance applied science and ecological literacy through community engagement and agency partnerships, supporting national parks, forest, open spaces and public lands. GBI provides a wide variety of environmental services to train and develop the next generation of conservationists and resource managers.
