Wilderness Technician, Lake Tahoe
Description:
Spend the summer season serving at beautiful Lake Tahoe performing a variety of duties in support of wilderness management. Work alongside Forest Service staff to provide support to efforts in the wilderness program including recreation, ecology, data collection, trail systems, and fire. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the field wilderness management at the nations most visited wilderness sites. The Desolation Wilderness area is 63,690 acres located along the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is a popular backpacking destination, with much barren rocky terrain at the edge of the tree line.
Compensation:
This is an AmeriCorps position, and candidates will receive a living stipend of $9,902 for the season. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members bi-monthly throughout the entire year. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service, members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $2,362.50 that can be used for paying off student loans, or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.
Timeline: May 3, 2010 – October 30, 2010
Primary Scope of Responsibilities:
- Provide support to the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit’s wilderness management program.
- Provide information to the public including recreation opportunities, regulations, and Leave No Trace practices.
- Assist with trail maintenance, campsite restoration, encounter monitoring, user surveys, and litter collection.
- Collect fees and provide permits to the public.
Preferred Qualifications:
B.S. in recreation, natural resources, interpretation, or related degree.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Proven ability to work with the public including groups.
Ability to multi-task and work with a diverse group of volunteers, staff members, and children.
Requirements of the Position:
Ability to serve on holidays and weekends.
Applicant understands that time-off during peak times will not be granted.

Additional training will be provided by the USFS.
AmeriCorps Qualifications:
To qualify, you must be at least 17 years of age and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED (or be willing to achieve this before using education award). All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry.
