Great Basin Naturalists Day Camp

Essential Details


When: Monday-Friday DAY program. 8 am to 5 pm. Drop-off at 7:30 am, Pick-up by 5:30

Dates: Weekly from 6/21/10  to  8/27/10.  The week of July 4th, camp will only run Tuesday through Friday.

Who: Campers ages 8-12

Tuition: $195 per week except the week of July 4th, which is $165; campers bring their own bag lunch. Scholarships are now available. See below for details.

Where: The Galena Creek Regional Park is base of operations, with the Fish Hatchery Building & Camp We Ch Me our indoor refuges, for stormy weather, guest presenters, and classroom activities. Drop off and pick up will occur at the North entrance of the park at the Group Picnic area.

Registration & Payment: You can download an application form and return it by mail to us at “Great Basin Naturalists”, 16750 Mt. Rose Highway, Reno, NV 89511. You may register over the phone at 775-674-5485. Or you can send your registration by e-mail camp@thegreatbasininstitute.org. We accept checks, made out to Great Basin Institute, or we can take VISA, MasterCard, and DiscoverCard. All accounts must be paid in full 2 weeks prior to camp session.

We will begin to process applications on March 15. Just click on “Camper 2010 Application” above to download a pdf version of this document. If you have a child who is 7 or 13, we will consider accepting them after a face-to-face meeting with the child and parents and/or guardians. To introduce your child to us, please consider attending one of our Discovery Day events (listed below).

Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of Galena Creek program participants and local donors, the Great Basin Institute is able to offer 20 partial ($50) scholarships to the following sessions:

Becoming a Naturalist (June 21st-June 25th)
Weather and Climate Studies (brings price down to $115 for week, July 6th-July 9)
Earth Warriors (July 12-July 16)
Arts and Theatre (July 19th-July 23rd)
Forest Ecology (July 26th-July 30th)
Voyager Earth/Ecosystems of the World (August 16th-August 20th).

Scholarships, or as we like to call them, “Camperships” will be awarded based on demonstration of financial hardship or need in the family. Awards are made on a first-come, first-serve basis. To apply for a scholarship, please download this Campership 2010.

Camp Sessions and Dates

Camp will run Monday through Friday, June 21 to August 27th, from 8 am to 5 pm. Each week will have a different theme, which you can view descriptions of by clicking on “Dates and Camp Themes” above. The mornings at camp will be more focused on educational and service-learning activities, while afternoons will emphasize play and recreational activity.

Camp Forms

These include medical history, camper pick-up forms, a packing list and out of camp field trip forms. A complete packet will be mailed to you upon receipt and processing of your child’s application.
 

Discovery Day Events

Come meet some of the camp staff and try out hands-on activities planned for this year’s camp.
We have events planned for April 3, April 17, May 1, and May 22. These events will run from 10 to 1:30 pm at Galena Creek Regional Park in the Eagle Meadows on the north side of the park. From 10:00 to 11:45 am we will have hands-on activities. Bring a lunch and join us at 12:00 pm for a kid friendly hike.
