Natural Resource Management Interns

Description:  Working collaboratively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting (9) nine natural resource interns.  The primary responsibility of the interns will be to provide outreach to visitors to Lake Mead regarding boat and water safety, and invasive quagga mussels, as well as general information about Lake Mead and the opportunities the NRA provides. Interns will provide logistic support at boat launches, especially during peak put-in and take-out times, to ensure visitors launch and take-out boats in an orderly fashion and with the hope of reducing wait times and greenhouse gas emissions from idling vehicles and boats. Training to provide immediate response to medical emergencies will also be provided.

Timeline: 6-month position beginning mid-March, 2015

Compensation: Living Allowance: $9,500 and Education Award of $2,822.

Arid Land Restoration and Native Seed Interns

Description:  The Great Basin Institute is working cooperatively with the Bureau of Land Management Southern Nevada District Office to conduct seed collecting and ecological restoration activities throughout BLM Southern Nevada District lands. Two interns will be selected to support current, on-going, and future restoration efforts

Timeline: 6-month position beginning February 16, 2015

Compensation: Living Allowance: $6,696, housing stipend of $1,800, and Education Award of $2,822.

2015 AmeriCorps Summer Crew Member

Description:  As a NCC crew member, you will live and work in some of Nevada’s premiere outdoor recreation and wilderness areas.  You will work alongside other members from across the country who share a common passion for conservation and the outdoors.  The NCC strives to contribute real and meaningful improvements to Nevada’s public lands, and as such our crew related work focuses on on-the-ground implementation of conservation projects.  As a member you will be in the field, swinging tools, and getting your hands dirty every day of service.  The NCC is looking for members that understand the value of hard work and are ready to get in the field and get things done.

Timeline: mid-May 2015 – mid-August 2015 depending on placement

Archaeology Intern

Description:  Working collaboratively with the BLM Caliente Field Office, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting two Archaeology Intern to contribute to the management, protection and conservation of public lands by enhancing the ability of professional BLM staff to collect the information necessary for making informed decisions regarding the management of Cultural and Natural Resources in Eastern Nevada. Specific duties will include: (1) cultural site field monitoring; (2) field inventories to determine compliance with permits; (3) resource damage documentation; (4) GIS mapping and data management; (5) field reports; and (6) recreation site monitoring and compliance. This position would serve 2 consecutive AmeriCorps terms of service as described below.

Timeline: 1 900-hour position beginning January 5th 2015 – July 3rd, 2015 and 1 450-hour position beginning July 6th, 2015 through September 2nd, 2015

Compensation: Living Allowance: $7,000 for 900-hour position and $3,500 for 450-hour position. Education Award: $2,822 for 900-hour position and $1,493 for 450-hour position.
